Social Media…..

As I was carousing Facebook this morning, I noticed an increasing number of  companies asking what is a typical amount to spend on your child for Christmas.. Some of the responses were, well let’s just say WOW!

Another thing I noticed was how “rude” people could be about the companies asking this question. Personally I think it is your choice to answer or not. If you don’t like that people are responding, simply move along. Don’t berate the company or the people or stating THEIR opinion or what THEY think.

If you don’t want to talk about your finances, good for you. If you don’t want others to know what you spent on your child(ren) good for you. There is no cause to give another a hard time because they decide to let others know how they choose to spend their money, how they save to pay for Christmas, or the amount they spend.

Some of the amounts spent I just want to cringe… that is a house payment for us. Others, were a bit more reasonable, but I can see how easy it would be to spend an obscene amount of money on your kids.

My boys are little, well 6, 5 and 3.5

They have asked for some big items, which they know they won’t get, but still like asking for them. Then there is the normal, cars, trains, Bucky the Pirate ship, Wii games {like Mickey’s Epic Adventure} and of course the ever present in our house.. Thomas the Train!

There are many other things that they want to and with the help of grandparents, we can all split the cost and it not be a small fortune! I know as they get older it might get more expensive… but only if we let it. There is where discretion comes in to play for each family.

Don’t let the joy of being together be overridden by the fact that you have to have gazillions of presents under the tree. The most important thing about the season is to be together and rejoice in the King of Kings.

I’ve said my peace. You don’t have to like it or even agree with it. But may it give you cause to think about why we are giving or getting gifts. Do we even have to keep up that tradition? Why can’t it just be something little? Set a limit, make your own? Do you really have to try and keep up with the world and everything in it? Yes it is nice to have all that, yes there are some things that I WANT! I don’t need them, but they would be useful in a homeschooling family.

I hope you have a great weekend!
